Last Saturday, June 15th, over 120 individuals gathered at the Episcopal Retreat & Conference Center in Salt Lake City to celebrate Canon Chancellor Steven Hutchinson, Esq., and his 40+ year career serving the Diocese of Utah in various legal and administrative roles. In addition to serving as the longtime Chancellor for our Diocese and the Diocese of Navajoland, Canon Hutchinson was also instrumental as the Director for Episcopal Community Services, significantly expanding ECS at St. Mark’s Hospital, Professional Hospital Chaplaincy Services, Senior Living Chaplaincy, Youth Impact, Art Empowers, and more.
Invitees, including Canon Chancellor Hutchinson, arrived to enjoy an array of delicious foods: chicken skewers, meatballs, bacon-wrapped jalapenos, and various grilled veggies and crudités. Attendees included friends and family of Canon Hutchinson, clergy members and employees from the Diocese of Utah, our churches, and partner organizations. Bishop Phyllis Spiegel, Bishop Scott Hayashi, and fellow Chancellors also attended.
Throughout the evening, we learned from colleagues and countless stories about Chancellor Hutchinson’s expertise and quiet wisdom. Family stories revealed the entire time he was dually- committed to being a loving husband and compassionate father. In both cases, he is known for being dependable and willing to drop everything to help others in a moment of need.
At the end of the evening, Chancellor Hutchinson shared his retirement plans, which include traveling with his family and grandchildren and playing many rounds of golf, which will undoubtedly be aided by the ornate cross and custom Diocese of Utah golf balls gifted to him. Bishop Phyllis Spiegel closed the night anointing and blessing Steve and his wife, Pam. With these gifts and the Bishop’s blessing, the Diocese of Utah wishes Steve a wonderful retirement journey.
He will continue to serve in his role until after the 81st General Convention in Louisville, Kentucky this summer. His position will be assumed by Branden Burningham, Esq., who has worked alongside Steve as a Vice Chancellor for seven years.
